Smart Noshery Makes You Slobber

Smart Noshery, originally uploaded by leondznanjing.

Some minor things like leaflet footers here come up with fantastic Chinglish, some just annoying; usually, things as important as shop signs have the odd missing letter or spelling mistake. But this neon-lit restaurant sign's excellent - almost looks like it's been crafted by a native speaker with a sense of humour, right?

I eat there pretty regularly, and once asked the owner (not a native speaker) where he got the name from. He said, apparently seriously, that he chose the words out of a dictionary because "they sound distinguished and high level". So now you know. ;)

I doubt you eat there regulary because I go there almost daily for lunch but don't remember seeing you. It's make-believe to tell people the guy just looked it up in a dictionary and put together the English name by himself. I suspect some naughty native speaker came up with that. If you go to Yangshou or Lijiang, you'll see many examples like that - native speakers of English putting their creativity and mischief to good use.
